Is It Safe To Naturally Whiten Your Teeth At Home?

As social media continues to rule the world, more and more people are intrigued about natural teeth whitening techniques.  From oil pulling, baking soda or charcoal toothpaste the fad is going wild.  However, the question lies, are they safe?  Are they effective?  Continue on reading to find out!

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is the newest fad where users take a tablespoon of cooking oil, like coconut or sesame oil and swish it around in their mouths for 15-20 minutes to detox their mouths.  Some studies show that the oil can help remove plaque, prevent gingivitis and bad breath.  However, the FDA has not actually backed these claims up.  While oil pulling is not as harmful as using baking soda or charcoal on your teeth, there is no evidence that it will provide any other dental benefits, let alone whiten your teeth.

Charcoal Whitening

Another big social media frenzy!  Use charcoal toothpaste to remove stains and whiten your teeth.

Note that charcoal teeth whitening is not approved by the FDA.  There again is not evidence that suggests products with charcoal are safe or effective.  In fact, it has been shown to cause damage to your teeth if used frequently.  As you know, charcoal is abrasive and WILL wear away the enamel which protects your teeth.  Once your enamel is worn away it does not come back leaving your teeth more susceptible to cavities.

Baking Soda Whitening

The next culprit in damaging tooth enamel.  Again, very abrasive when applied to your teeth not to mention it has no fluoride in it, which helps protect against cavities.  Frequent usage of baking soda can cause the teeth to have a translucence appearance as well as cause sensitivity.

Safe Whitening Methods

Some at home whitening methods aren’t harmful, however it’s always best to choose dental products backed by the ADA.  Look for the ADA seal on the packing.  Make sure to ask your dentist which products are best prior to using them, because once your enamel is gone it will not regenerate!
