February Is National Children's Dental Health Month

National children’s dental health month is dedicated to bring awareness to the importance of your children’s oral health. Many parents get caught up in the business of everyday life and can often forget about taking the extra step at night to ensure their children are brushing their teeth. Not only is it important for them to brush in the morning, it’s even more important to have them brush at night time. Stop for a moment and think about how much food and liquids your children consume throughout the day. If they do not brush at night, the bacteria will continue to remain on their teeth for more than 24 hours until they brush again. Eventually causing tooth decay.

The most common chronic disease in children is tooth decay.  Despite the fact that is almost entirely preventable. As parents, we are our children’s care takers. It is our responsibility to ensure our children are practicing good oral health habits, so that they continue to keep these habits for a lifetime. It is not just that our children need a good example from their parents, it is also just as essential for them to understand what happens when they do not take care of their teeth.

First and foremost, practice brushing 2 times a day for 2 minutes each time with fluoridated toothpaste. (Don’t forget to floss). Studies show that children who do not use fluoridated toothpaste have more tooth decay then children who do.

Secondly, do not allow your children to sip on sugary drinks all day long. One of the worst things you can do is fill a bottle or a sippy cup up with juice and leave it to be sipped on all day. Parents, this even counts with milk. Although it does not have nearly a fraction of the sugar that juice does, it can still wreak havoc on your kid’s teeth. If you are going to give them one of these drinks, make sure it is only with a meal. After they are done give them a glass of water to wash away the bacteria.

Thirdly, see your dentist twice a year for a dental cleaning and checkup.  Frequent visits to the dentist will help form a healthy habit for your children.

As always, we thank you for being part of our dental family and look forward to seeing you at your next visit!
