Professional hockey organizations have several medical personnel on staff to ensure the players remain at their optimum performance level. The medical team includes a dentist who is in attendance at every game, ready to treat players that have suffered a dental injury on the ice.
In sports, the challenge is to maximize the benefits of participation and to limit injuries. Sports dentistry has a major role to play in this area. Prevention and adequate preparation are the key elements in minimizing injuries that occur in sports. Properly diagnosed, designed, and custom fabricated mouthguards are essential in the prevention of athletic oral/facial injuries.
Every fall, Dr. Boogren and Dr. Freij travel to Traverse City, Michigan for the Detroit Red Wings training camp. At this time, each player is fitted for a custom mouth guard that is worn throughout the season. Preseason and postseason screenings and examinations are also an essential part of sports dentistry. These exams ensure optimal oral health for the professional athlete.
